Day 3 of 5 — Built To Last. About 3 minutes.
And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.
1 Samuel 7:7
It happens often enough to notice. You start reading your Bible again and the week goes sideways. You commit to the marriage and the fight comes Tuesday. You tell God you will give more and the truck needs a transmission. People say it is coincidence. Israel found out at Mizpeh that it is not always coincidence, and that it is not always bad news either.
Read the order in verse seven. The Philistines heard that Israel had gathered. Then they came up. The attack was not random. It was a response. For twenty years Israel had been no threat to anyone because Israel was not seeking God. The moment they got serious, they got noticed. Their obedience made them a target that their compromise never did.
Then comes the honest half of the verse. They were afraid. These are the same men who had just fasted and confessed. Scripture does not clean them up. Real repentance does not hand you nerves of steel by Wednesday. It puts you in the right place, facing the right direction, still scared. Fear is not proof you took a wrong turn.
So do not read the pushback as a verdict. If obedience got harder this week, that is worth noticing, not worth quitting over. Israel did not scatter back to their towns. They stayed at Mizpeh and asked Samuel not to stop crying to God for them. Stay where you are. Whatever you started on Monday, do it again today, with the fear still in your chest.
Growth principle: Opposition often arrives right after obedience, and it is a sign of direction, not error.
Take it with you: Do today the one obedient thing you were tempted to drop when the week pushed back.
Pause and pray: Lord, I am doing what you asked and it got harder, not easier. I am afraid. Keep me standing here instead of running home. Help me obey again today. Amen.
